Carter's Corner: 500 Games At The Swamp — And Milestones You Might Have Missed
Thursday, October 8, 2026 | Football, Scott Carter
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — A hundred years later, the Roaring Twenties remain a fixture in American lore. They are often called the "Golden Age of Sports."
The start of commercial radio broadcasting and famed sports writer Grantland Rice transformed athletes such as Babe Ruth and Red Grange into larger-than-life figures.

At the University of Florida, near the end of the Roaring Twenties, the Gators had their best season to date, led by quarterback "Cannonball" Clyde Crabtree and UF's first All-American, two-way star Dale Van Sickel.
Florida's 8-1 season in 1928 under first-year head coach Charlie Bachman renewed excitement about the football program and paved the way for the creation of the University Athletic Association the following year, and in 1930, the dedication of Florida Field, which remains the home of the Gators 96 years later.
On Saturday, the Gators will host South Carolina in their 500th all-time game at what is now known as Steve Spurrier-Florida Field at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. Since the early 1990s, many have simply called it "The Swamp."
I wrote about the upcoming milestone recently and how a deep dive into the record books over the summer verified the dates, scores and locations of all UF football games since the 1930 season.
Now, let's have some fun and take a closer look at some key games – laced with oddities that you, perhaps like me, had either forgotten or never knew.
These are not the home games we all remember or have called up on YouTube: Wilbur Marshall's performance against Southern Cal, Kerwin Bell's heroics against Auburn, Steve Spurrier's debut as head coach, the win over FSU in '97, Jarvis Moss's block field goal against South Carolina, Tim Tebow's final game in The Swamp or Antonio Callaway's catch-and-run score against Tennessee.
These are moments on Florida Field that led to bigger and better days in the modern era of Gators football.

But they sat through the encounter and were rewarded with a complete view of what is perhaps the best college football aggregation in the South." — Sam Butz, Florida Times-Union

Meanwhile, Tampa resident George Edmondson, tired of hearing fans boo, started to chant "two-bits, four-bits, six-bits a dollar, all for the Gators, stand up and holler." Mr. Two Bits was born.
RECORDED: "Against sterner competition, the University of Florida's hopeful football forces might have suffered severely last night. However, the Citadel Cadets did not possess the necessary overall manpower and Florida's Gators, despite a more or less unimpressive performance, defeated the Charleston, S.C., militants." — Bernard Kahn, Daytona Beach News-Journal
