What Happened
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Quarterback John Mateer passed for 207 yards and a pair of touchdowns, but it was the Oklahoma defense that set the tone in the Sooners' one-sided 23-7 victory over 24th-ranked Florida in their Southeastern Conference game Saturday night at sold-out Spurrier/Florida Field.OU came into the game ranked next-to-last in the league in both scoring and total offense, having fired its offensive coordinator after last week's home loss to South Carolina. But it was the UF offense and quarterback Tramell Jones Jr., making his second career start and first at home, that were completely overwhelmed in being held to just 203 yards of offense and posting the fewest points at the "Swamp" since a 27-2 loss to Florida State on Nov. 28, 2015.
Make that a second straight game with a single-digit number on the scoreboard, following last week's 27-8 loss to third-ranked Georgia.
Mateer completed 21 of 33 passes with touchdown tosses of three and six yards without committing a turnover, marking the fifth consecutive game the UF defense has gone without an interception. Oklahoma, which had scoring marches of 15 plays in the first half and 20 in the second, finished with 351 yards of offense, including 144 on the ground, with 56 from Mateer.
Jones, the second-year freshman, completed just 10 of 22 attempts for 133 yards and two interceptions, including a critical end-zone pick in the third quarter when the Gators had a shot to take the lead. Tailback Jadan Baugh again failed to find creases in the struggling UF offensive line, finishing with eight carries for 35 yards and his team's lone score of the game, a 15-yard run in the second quarter.
OU took a 3-0 lead on its first possession, thanks to Mateer's 41-yard strike up the right sideline to tight end Rocky Beers. The Sooners settled for a 41-yard field goal by Tate Sandell. Mateer made it 10-0 midway through the second period when he engineered a 15-play, 84-yard drive that took more than seven minutes. He capped it on a second-and-goal from 3 with a play-fake into the line, then rolled to his right and soft-tossed a touchdown to wide-open tight end Hayden Hansen, who played the previous four seasons with the Gators.
It took UF's first defensive stop of the game to make things interesting. The Gators forced OU's first punt with just over five minutes to go before halftime, a 53-yarder that Bailey Stockton fielded at his 17-yard line. Stockton made the first man miss, sped left and found room up the sideline for a 31-yard return to the Florida 48. Four plays later, Baugh broke a run to the outside and tapped the ball on the pylon for a diving 15-yard scoring run that made the score 10-7.
Oklahoma got the ball with 2:56 to go before intermission and promptly hit plays of 14, 11 and 15 yards that put Sandell in position to nail a 48-yard field goal that sent the Sooners to the locker room up 13-7.
Florida had an excellent chance to take the lead on its second possession of the second half. On third-and-10 from the Gators' 44, Jones hit tailback Duke Clark on a swing pass. Clark got two nice blocks downfield and gained 33 yards to the OU 24. The next three plays gained seven yards, with UF coach Jon Sumrall opting to go for it on fourth-and-3 from the 17, rather than kick the field goal. Under pressure, Jones had wideout Eric Singleton Jr. uncovered in the end zone, but the pass, thrown off his back foot and falling away, was badly underthrown and intercepted by OU safety Courtland Guillory in the end zone for a touchback.
The score still stood at 13-7 late in the third quarter when the Sooners took off on their 20-play, 89-yard march that ate up a whopping 12 minutes, 45 seconds and ended with a 6-yard scoring toss to wideout Isaiah Sategna III with 5:01 to go for a 20-7 lead.
OU tagged on a 31-yard Sandell field goal with 1:56 remaining.
What it Means
That 4-0 start by the Gators feels like it happened years ago, as they've now dropped four of five and remain one win from becoming bowl eligible. That'll be the least of Sumrall's concerns this week, however, as this team has gobs of work to do — and may be looking at another quarterback change. In the Spotlight
Two days after losing 42-25 at home against South Carolina, the Sooners on Monday fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and named tight ends coach Jason Witten, the former Dallas Cowboys superstar and future Pro Football Hall-of-Famer, to the interim post. Against a UF defense that seemed to be improving the last few weeks, the OU offense ran 73 plays (26 more than UF), averaged 4.8 yards per snap and went 3-for-3 with its red zone opportunities.Staggering Statistic
The game marked Oklahoma's first since it joined the SEC in 2024 — three seasons and 35 games — when the Sooners scored on their first two offensive possessions. For the Gators, it was downhill from there.Up Next
Florida (5-4) heads to its newfound house of horrors — Kroger Field — to face No. 8 Kentucky, where the Gators have lost three straight, dating to 2021, including a 38-7 massacre in '24. The Wildcats (7-2), under first-year head coach and UK alum Will Stein, began Saturday in first place in the SEC standings, but got blown out 34-6 at Tennessee, so they figure to be in a mood when the Gators arrive.Email senior writer Chris Harry at chrish@gators.ufl.edu Find his story archives here.
