Lady Gators in 11th at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate
Saturday, October 13, 2001 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida Lady Gator golf team is in 11th place after the first day of play at the Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship, hosted by the University of Tennessee.
Duke holds the top spot after day one, shooting a 293, while Georgia is close behind with a 294. The Lady Gators shot a 311 to open the tournament.
"We didn't have a good score today. There were just no outstanding scores by our team to help or score get lower," said Head Coach Jill Briles-Hinton. "But now that we've got a round under our belts, the girls are more comfortable with the golf course. We hope to go lower tomorrow and get back in the hunt."
Individually, freshman Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) led the Lady Gators with a five-over-par 77, as did junior Brittany Straza (Ft. Myers, Fla.). Junior Jeanne Cho (Bradenton, Fla.) followed with a 78, and sophomore Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) shot a 79. Freshman Whitney Code (Tampa, Fla.) rounded out Florida's playing five with an 82.
The Lady Gators tee off Saturday at 9:20 a.m.
