The University of Florida golf team is in seventh place with a score of 313 after the first day of competition at the 2002 Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship hosted by the University of Tennessee. The Swedish Junior National team is in first place with a first-round score of 300.
"This is a very difficult golf course. You have to use your head and place the ball in the correct position to score well," Head Coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "We had a great practice session after today's round and hopefully we can come on strong tomorrow."
Junior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) is tied for second place after shooting a one-over-par 73, after leading the tournament for most of the first-round. Senior Jeanne Cho (Bradenton, Fla.) is tied for 27th-place, shooting a 78 and fellow senior Brittany Straza (Fort Myers, Fla.) shot a 79 and is tied for 34th-place. Sophomore Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) is tied for 57th, shooting a first-round 83 and freshman Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Columbia) shot an 86 and is tied for 73rd. Junior Joy Stephenson (Fort Myers, Fla.) is competing as an individual and finished the first round with an 82.
"Amanda had an incredible round today, she is swinging at it better than ever," Briles-Hinton said. "She had an unfortunate run-in with the 17th-hole, but I'm confident she will rebound well from it and play strong tomorrow."
Florida will tee off Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Gettysvue Polo, Country Club. Live scoring of the tournament can be found at www.golfstat.com. The final round of the tournament will take place Sunday.
