Friday, November 1, 2002 | Women's Golf
The 13th-ranked University of Florida women's golf team is 10th place with a score of 303 after the first day of competition at the 2002 Auburn Derby Invitational. The tournament, hosted by the University of Auburn, matches the Lady Gators against the top five teams in the nation and seven of the top-10. No. 10 Tennessee leads the 13-team tournament with a first-round score of 289.
"We are competing against the best teams in the country. To shoot a 303 and be in 10th place says a lot about the tournament field," Head Coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "We are capable of going lower and I feel our team will shoot better tomorrow."
Sophomore Whitney Code (Tampa, Fla.) led the Lady Gators during the first day of the Derby, shooting a one-over-par 73 and is in a tie for 14th-place.
"Whitney had a fine round today," Briles-Hinton said. "I am very happy with her performance and I am hoping that she will match or beat her score in the next two days."
Senior Jeanne Cho (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) are both tied for 33rd place after shooting a four-over-par 76. Sophomore Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) shot a 78 and is tied for 45th-place after the first round. Senior Brittany Straza (Fort Myers, Fla.) is tied for 66th place, shooting a 79. Freshman Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Columbia) is competing as an individual, finishing the first round tied for 59th with a score of 81.
Florida will tee off Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. at the Auburn University Club. Live scoring of the tournament can be found at www.auburntigers.com. The final round of the tournament will take place Sunday.
