No. 1 Men's Golf Third At Carpet Capital

Led by solid contributions from top to bottom, the No. 1 University of Florida men's golf team fired a first round 295 to stand in a tie for third after the opening round of the 2003 Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm Golf Club on Friday.
Senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) led the way for the Gators by finishing at an even par 72, which tied him for 10th. Clemson's Matt Hendrix is the individual leader after shooting a three-under 69 at the par 72, 7,010-yard course. Clemson also sits atop the team standings with after carding an opening round 289.
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) fell next in line for the Gators after shooting rounds of 74 (+2) to tie for 25th.
After finishing at a three-over 75, sophomore James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) is tied for 35th, while sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) sank four birdies on the back nine to finish the day at 76 (+4) in a tie for 44th.
