Men's Golf In Fifth After First Day of Regional

The No. 5 University of Florida men's golf team is tied for fifth place at 290 (+2) following the first day of competition at the NCAA East Regional Thursday at the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Ala. The top-10 teams from the tournament will advance to the NCAA Championships May 27-30 at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
The Gators are tied with Augusta State and Wake Forest, while Tennessee and Georgia Tech are tied for the top spot at 281 (-7).
Freshman James Vargas (Miami, Fla.) is the highest Gator following the first 18-holes as he is tied for 18th at –1 (71). Vargas was the only Gator on the afternoon to shoot in the red.
Following Vargas is fellow freshman Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.), who is tied for 24th at even-par (72). Junior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) is tied for 35th at +1 (73), while senior Jordan Code (Tampa, Fla.) follows at 74 (+2), which is good enough for a tie for 45th. Freshman Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) is the other Gator golfer on the day, as he is tied for 69th at +4 (76).
The second round of the East Regional will begin at 9 a.m. Friday at the Auburn University Club.
