The University of Florida men's golf team participating in the inaugural Isleworth Invitational at the Isleworth Country Club, posted a 53-over par score of 917 during the three round tournament, to finish in 11th place.
The Gators struggled on the 7,426-yard course during the final round of play, posting a 32-over par score of 320. Despite the final round set back, the Gators gained valuable tournament experience to build upon.
"For us the final round was very disappointing," Head Coach Buddy Alexander said. "You learn a lot from tournaments like this and that is what we intend to do. We will look at how we can reduce the number of mistakes we make and move on."
Leading the Gators was junior Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.), posting rounds of 67 (-5), 70 (-2) and 78 (+6), to finish tied for sixth place with a one-under par score of 215. In only his third tournament this season, Every has yet to finish a tournament above par, as he recorded even par tournament scores at both the NCAA Preview and the Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Invitational.
Junior Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) tied for 52nd place, despite slicing two strokes off his second round score of 80 (+8), to card a six-over par score of 78. Stegmaier, who carded an opening round score of 76 (+4), was named a preseason All-American by Golfweek magazine.
Playing in only his third collegiate golf tournament, redshirt freshman Manuel Villegas (Medellin, Columbia) carded rounds of 80 (+8), 75 (+3) and 81 (+9), to finish tied with teammate Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.) for 57th place. Cochran, recording a total score of 236 (+20), recorded a final round score of 83 (+11).
True freshman Will Strickler (Charlottesville, Va.), completed his first collegiate golf tournament and gained valuable playing experience that will help to further develop the talented rookie. By recording a 27-over par score of 243, Strickler placed 73rd.
"This team will rebound from this set back," Alexander said. "We have a lot of talent on this team and I know they are capable of bouncing back."
The Gators return to action Nov. 5-7, as they travel to The Farm to contest the postponed Carpet Capital Collegiate in Dalton, Ga. The event hosted by Georgia Tech, will feature more than 10 teams currently ranked in the Top 25.
