After two tough days of competition, the No. 9 University of Florida women's golf team is in 14th place with a two-round score of 627 at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge. The tournament features seven of the top 10 teams in the nation.
"This is one of the toughest courses we play during the year," women's golf head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "As a coach, I would like us to score better, but this experience in the long run will only help us in postseason play. I keep reminding the girls to stay focused and take it one stroke at a time."
UCLA held on to the top spot with a score of 579. New Mexico (604), Arizona (606), Ohio State (612) and California (613) round out the top five.
Sophomore Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) led the Lady Gators after carding her second consecutive three-over par round of 74. Cho currently is tied for eighth place with a two-round score of 148.
Junior Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) carded an 79 for the second round, moving her up to tie for 67th place (85-79--164). Vander Lende only had three bogeys on her last nine holes.
Senior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.), who is seeing her first collegiate tournament action since the 2003 NCAAs, birdied on the fourth hole and was only two strokes over on the front nine. However, she finished with an 81, giving her a two-round score of 162 which ties her for 59th place.
Other finishers for the Lady Gators included sophomores Tarah McNaughton (Bradenton, Fla.) who carded an 84, and Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) who was one stroke behind with an 85.
"We're a little rusty," Briles-Hinton said. " This is one great golf course. The greens are unbelievably tough. Regardless of what we shoot here, the experience is priceless. It's only going to help us for nationals."
The Lady Gators tee off tomorrow morning for the final round of the tournament. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com.
