Sunday, March 7, 2004 | Women's Golf
In increasingly windy conditions, senior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) led the No. 15 University of Florida women's golf team to a tie for seventh place (308, +28) after the first round of the 32nd Annual SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational on Sunday.
"It was tough today, and we didn't do as well as we wanted," Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "But it's our home golf course, and the athletes know this course. Tomorrow is moving day—we hope to move tomorrow."
Dick carded a five-over-par 75 to tie for 10th place. Sophomore Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) is tied for 16th with a six-over-par 76, while sophomore Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) was right behind her with a first-round 77..
"I think I played pretty well," Dick said. "I made some mental errors and hopefully tomorrow I can get everything smoothed out. The conditions were a little rough with the wind blowing in the afternoon. It's our home golf course and we should be able to come out and play better tomorrow. I think everybody feels that way."
Duke holds the top spot with a score of 292 (+12). Michigan State and Ohio State are tied for second at 299, followed by Tennessee (301) and Vanderbilt (306) to round out the top five.
In the overall individual standings, Michigan State's Allison Fouch is in first place after carding a 69. Brittany Lang of Duke is tied for second along with Violeta Retamoza of Tennessee with a score of 72.
