Sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) fired a five-under 67 in the first round and is in third place after the first two rounds in leading No. 1 Florida to stand in second place at the Schenkel E-Z Go Invitational Saturday at Forest Heights Country Club.
Wake Forest leads a tight group of teams entering Sunday's final round at the par 72, 6,962-yard course. The Demon Deacons are ahead of Florida by one stroke after rounds of 287 (-1) and 282 (-6) left them at 569 (-7). The Gators shot an eight-under 280 in the first round before a 290 (+2) added up to a two-round sum of 570 (-6). Duke 571 (-5), Ohio State 573 (-3), South Carolina 574 (-2) and Augusta State 574 (-2) round out the top five.
"We played a solid morning round and a not-so-solid second round," Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. "Wake Forest's got a lead and we'll see if we can catch them. We're not in a bad spot at all and I think we'll take care of business. The team feels like they let one slip away in Las Vegas last week, so they'll be fired up and ready for tomorrow."
Every posted five birdies and no bogies en route to the best first-round score of his career with a 67 (-5), which also stands as his lowest score of the spring. He shot a 72 in the second round and is at 139 (-5) entering the final round – seven strokes behind Wake Forest's Bill Haas 132 (-12) for first and one behind Georgia's Chris Kirk 138 (-6) for second. Every will be looking to finish inside the top 10 for the seventh time in nine tournaments this season.
Senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) is just three strokes behind Every in a tie for 11th after carding his 17th and 18th even or under par rounds of the season. He finished with five birdies in his opening round of 70 and added four in his second round of 72 in attempting to finish inside the top 20 for the 14th time in the last 15 tournaments.
One stroke behind Villegas was freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.) who's in the hunt for his seventh top-20 finish of the season. He enters Sunday's final round in a tie for 17th after opening day rounds of 71-72 = 143 (-1). His first round score was his second best in the last 11 rounds he's played.
Sophomore Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) started well with his 10th even or under par round of the season with a 72 before carding a 76 in the second round to stand in a tie for 45h at 148 (+4), while junior Duke Butler IV (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) is two strokes behind Stegmaier in a tie for 56th after rounds of 76 and 74, the latter of which featured an eagle on No. 7 and a pair of birdies No. 9 and No. 11.
