Villegas Breaks UF Record; No. 1 Men's Golf Wins 7th Tourney

Senior Camilo Villegas (Medellin, Colombia) set the Florida record by winning his eighth career tournament, while the No. 1 ranked Gators claimed their seventh win of the season and second consecutive Atlanta Intercollegiate title after the final round of play on Tuesday at Eagles Landing Country Club.
Florida's three-round score of 839 (-25) tied for the fifth best by par in school history and was 14 shots better than runner up South Carolina (853). Villegas claimed individual medalist honors after a final round 68 (-4) to finish at 204 (-12) for the tournament and two shots ahead of freshman Jessie Mudd (Louisville, Ky.), who finished second at the par 72, 6,899-yard course.
"We played solid again today and winning never gets old," Florida coach Buddy Alexander said. "Hopefully we can keep this momentum going during our break until we play in the SEC Tournament in a few weeks."
Villegas moved past Chris DiMarco for sole possession of the Florida career wins total with his eighth victory. Villegas also became the first player in school history to win at least two titles in a season three times, while his score of 204 (-12) was the fourth best by par in Florida history.
"It's definitely a special thing and it meant a lot to him," Alexander said. "I know that he's talked to Chris and they had some friendly banter about it. I'm really proud of him and I think Camilo's definitely a guy who's worthy of breaking the record."
Mudd enjoyed his best tournament of the season by finishing second. His final round 68 (-4) gave him a tournament score of 206 (-10), which stands as the ninth best by par in school history. His score of 68 in the last round ties for the second best of his career and helped Mudd finish in the top 10 for the second straight tournament.
Sophomore Matt Every (Daytona Beach, Fla.) was the third Gator to finish in the top 10 after a final round 71 (-1) left him at 211 (-5) for the tournament and in a tie for eighth. Every ran his streak of consecutive rounds at even or under par to 11 and finished in the top 10 for the eighth time in 10 tournaments this year.
Sophomores Ryan Cochran (Paducah, Ky.) and Brett Stegmaier (Madison, Conn.) rounded out the Florida players as each finished tied for 49th. Cochran ended the tournament with a 77 (+5) to finish at 226 (+10), while Stegmaier shot a final round 82 (+10).
The Atlanta Intercollegiate was Florida's final regular season tournament before the Gators travel to Sea Island, Ga. for the 2004 SEC Championship April 16-18 at Sea Island Golf Course.
