Tuesday, March 9, 2004 | Women's Golf
With two top-10 individual finishes, the No. 15 University of Florida women's golf team tied for fourth Tuesday at the 32nd Annual SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational. The Lady Gators carded a 919 (308-309-302) for the three-day tournament held at the UF Golf Course.
"We should have played better--this is our home golf course," Florida women's golf head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "We are on track to getting better. We are going to continue to work on it and get ready for postseason play."
No. 1 Duke remained undefeated this season as the Blue Devils took the top spot with a three-round total of 878, which ties for seventh-best in tournament history. Sixth-ranked Ohio State finished second with a score of 911 and No. 17 Michigan State was close behind with 914 strokes to finish in third. No. 15 Florida tied with No. 8 Auburn (919) to round out the top four teams.
Sophomore Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) led the Lady Gators as she tied for sixth with a three-round total of 216 (77-73-73). Cho has three top-10 finishes this season.
"The first day, I hit a lot of trees," Cho said. "That was not like me at all because I am pretty accurate. Mentally, it was a struggle. I was pretty confident going in to today, feeling like I know to play this game. Today I missed a lot of fairways and had to scramble for 73. The course is playing really tough. The wind picked up again and then it was really hard to judge."
With a season-low score of 227, sophomore Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) tied for 10th place, her best finish this season.
"Camilla Gonzalez did an outstanding job," Briles-Hinton said. "Outside of the first round, Aimee Cho did an outstanding job. Tarah McNaughton is coming out of a slump, and she is digging herself out. They all had bright spots. We just need to continue to get the scores lower."
The Lady Gators will travel to Brown Summit, N.C., for the Bryan National Collegiate Golf Tournament April 2-4, 2004, their final regular season tournament before the Southeastern Conference Championship.
