An under par performance by junior Andrea Vander Lende (Longwood, Fla.) helped move the No. 13 Florida women's golf team to fourth place at the end of the second round of the 2004 NCAA East Regional Championships.
Vander Lende carded he first under-par round of the season as she tallied 71 strokes Friday. The 2003 NCAA Runner-Up birdied five holes, including three on the back nine.
"Andrea did a fantastic job today," Florida head coach Jill Briles-Hinton said. "I'm so proud of her. She had a tough round yesterday, but she came back strong today. She figured out the back nine today and put together a nice round."
As a team, Florida turned in a score of 295, bringing its two-day total to 605. The Lady Gators were only seven strokes over for the day, the third best team performance of the round.
UF was much improved from the first round. The team totaled 12 birdies in the second round, after firing only three birdies in the first round.
"We did fantastic," Briles-Hinton said. "We dug ourselves out of the hole we were in yesterday. We made better decisions today. We had three total double bogeys today and only one counted. We also had more birdies today than yesterday, so that was an improvement."
Duke (578) remains 16 strokes ahead of second-place UNLV (594). UNC moved up to third place with a score of 597. Florida is in fourth (605), and Oklahoma State and Wake Forest are in a tie for fifth with a score of 607.
Senior Amanda Dick (Clearwater, Fla.) had a solid round as she finished one-under on the back nine and carded a 73 for the day. Dick, who shot a 78 in the first round, jumped to tie for 22nd place in the individual standings.
Sophomore Aimee Cho (Orlando, Fla.) moved up to tie for 22nd place as she carded a 75 for the round. Cho has a two-day total of 151 (76-75).
A four-over par round (76) moved sophomore Camila Gonzalez (Bucaramanga, Colombia) in a tie for 37th place. Gonzalez has a two-day total of 154 (78-76).
"Camila struggled with her ball striking today, but her should game saved her and the team," Briles-Hinton said.
Florida will tee off Saturday at 8:10 a.m. The top eight teams at the conclusion of the final round on Saturday will advance to the NCAA Championships.
