Sunday, October 15, 2006 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team climbed up the leaderboard and moved into eighth place at the 2006 Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships after shaving eight strokes off its opening-round score and carding a 299 (+15) during Saturday's second round in Knoxville, Tenn. Redshirt sophomore Ornella Jouven (La Ciotat, France) continued to lead the Lady Gators for the second-straight day, and fired a two-over 73 to move into a tie for seventh place.
Jouven (74-73=147) started off the day on the par-71, 5,932-yard Cherokee Country Club even through the first three holes on the back nine before a double bogey on the par-3, 368-yard 14th hole cost her two strokes. She birdied the final hole on the backside to make the turn at one over, and followed with her second-straight birdie on the first hole to improve to even. Bogies on the fifth and eighth holes led her to a final second-round score of 73.
Like Jouven, sophomore Mallory Blackwelder (Versailles, Ky.) recorded a 73 Saturday afternoon. Blackwelder (82-73=155) shot an 82 Friday and entered the second round tied for 65th, but after cutting nine strokes from the first day of competition, she climbed into a tie for 39th.
Tiffany Chudy (Miramar, Fla.), Whitney Myers (East Berlin, Pa.) and Eleanor Tucker (Wilson, N.C.) continued to play consistently as the trio of juniors matched their opening round scores. Chudy (76-76=152) will enter Sunday's final round tied for 30th, while Myers (77-77=154) remains two strokes behind and is tied for 36th and Tucker (80-80=160) is tied for 61st.
Redshirt sophomore C.J. Kim (Rowland Heights, Calif.) improved her opening-round score by seven strokes, and is tied for 74th place (86-79=165) while competing as an individual in her season debut for the Lady Gators.
In the team standings, Auburn (287-301=588) holds a four-stroke lead over second-place Georgia (296-196=592), while host Tennessee (298-298=596) improved from fifth to third place after the second round of play. Arkansas (303-296=599) and the Swedish Junior National Team (296-306=602) round out the top five teams on the leaderboard.
The final round of action will get underway tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m., and the Lady Gators will tee off from the 10th hole beginning at 10:15 a.m. Live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com and www.gatorzone.com.
