M. Golf in Fourth, McKenney Tied for First at Isleworth Invitational
Sunday, October 25, 2009 | Men's Golf
Senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Fla.) led the Gators in the first round of the Isleworth Invitational after carding a four-under 68 to finish tied for the lead. Florida will enter the second round in fourth place with a team total of 292 (+4) at the par-72, 7,491-yard Isleworth Golf & Country Club.
“I thought we had a pretty solid round today,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “The No. 1 team in the country Oklahoma State is just one shot up on us. We're still in it and hopefully we can put together a couple more solid rounds and see where we end up.”
McKenney, making his second appearance of the fall season, tallied five-consecutive pars before making back-to-back birdies to enter the turn at two under. He collected two additional birdies on the tenth and 14th holes to finish the first round at four-under par. He is joined by Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State and Stanford's Steve Ziegler atop the individual leaderboard.
“Tim carried us a little bit today,” said Alexander. “He's very capable of doing well here and that's why he's in the lineup. We need to use his leadership for the rest of the week.”
Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) finished second among Gators on Sunday with a two-over 74. Alexander struggled early this morning, sitting at five-over par at one point after collecting five bogeys in his first 10 holes. But the senior battled back to collect three birdies and five pars in his final eight holes to finish in a tie for 16th.
A pair of Gator redshirt juniors tied for 23rd on day one with a three-over 75. Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) bounced back after carding a double bogey on his second hole to make a birdie on his third. He entered the turn at one-over and two bogeys on the back nine put him at three-over. Robbie Wight (Palm Beach, Fla.), making his season debut for the Orange and Blue, carded two bogeys in his first nine holes. It appeared as if he would finish the round at one-over after making a birdie on 11, but a double bogey on his final hole landed him at 75.
Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) rounded out Florida's lineup tied for 44th with a six-over 78 after carding two birdies, five bogeys and a triple bogey.
Stanford is currently in first place after carding a total score of 289 (+1). TCU and Oklahoma State are in second and third place, respectively, as each team is just one stroke behind the team ahead of them.
