M. Golf Earns Runner Up Honors at Isleworth Invitational
Tuesday, October 27, 2009 | Men's Golf
The UF men's golf team wrapped up its fall season with an impressive second place showing at the Isleworth Invitational on Tuesday. The Gators carded a 302 (+14) on the day to finish with a final score of 886 (292-292-302, +22). The finish was the best in the squad's three fall events.
Florida finished just five strokes behind Oklahoma State, the top-ranked team in the country. The Gators were tied with OSU for the lead with two golfers still on the course, but could never edge out the Cowboys. The eighth-ranked Gators finished the tournament ahead of four higher-ranked teams (No. 2 Arizona State, No. 3 Washington, No. 5 Stanford and No. 6 Illinois).
“We had a good week,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “This was a much different course that we played today. There was a lot of wind and obviously the scores were a lot higher. The conditions certainly increased the opportunity for more volatile action and that's what we saw. Certainly we are disappointed not to come away with the win when we were that close and had battled back so hard, but it's a solid finish to a fall season that was full of a lot of unknowns for me. I'm excited for the guys and I know they are as well. We are walking away with a lot more positives than negatives.”
Senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) had the best finish among his teammates, landing in a tie for seventh, his first top-10 showing of the season. Alexander continued to demonstrate his consistency, carding a one-over 73 for the second-consecutive round. He finished the tournament with a 220 (74-73-73, +4).
Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) struggled early, entering the turn at five-over after carding a double bogey followed by three-straight bogeys. The newcomer battled back to come within one stroke of par after making birdies on 10, 12, 14 and 16. He finished his round with a double bogey to finish the Isleworth Invitational in a tie for 16th, his best finish as a Gator, with a 222 (78-69-75, +6).
Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) carded a 224 (75-74-75, +8) to finish in a tie 20th. Senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had his highest round of the tournament on Tuesday with a seven-over 79 for a tournament total of 225 (68-78-79, +9), good for a tie for 22nd finish. Redshirt junior Robbie Wight (Palm Beach, Fla.) finished his season debut in a tie for 50th after carding a 232 (75-76-81, +16).
Alabama's Bud Cauley earned the individual crown by finishing just one stroke ahead of Stanford's Sihwan Kim, as the golfers carded a 211 (-5) and 212 (-4), respectively.
The Gators will resume play in the spring of 2010 at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Ariz., on Feb. 1-2.
