Men's Golf in Third Place after 36 Holes at Gary Koch Invitational
Sunday, October 4, 2009 | Men's Golf
The Florida men's golf team is currently in third place after two rounds at the Gary Koch Invitational on Saturday. The Gators carded a team score of 560 (277-283, -16) at the par-72, 7,389-yard Old Memorial Golf Club. Three UF golfers finished the day under par after 36 holes.
“The course was really easy,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “It's not like any type of course we will play in the post-season. I think the scores depict the course and not really how we played. I think we did similar to what we did in Chicago in that we had a couple guys play well and a couple guys struggle. It's up to me to make sure they we play more consistently and we will work on that. I think tomorrow will be a different story in that the golf course will be tougher.”
Senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) led the Gators with two solid rounds on Saturday. Alexander is currently in a tie for seventh after carding a five-under 67 in his first round, followed by a one-under 71 in his second for a total score of 138. He finished the afternoon with 11 birdies, the second-most of any golfer in the field.
Two Gators are currently tied for 13th place after carding a five-under 139. Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) carded a two-under 70 in his first round and improved his score by one stroke in his second, scoring a 69 (-3). Playing in his first collegiate tournament, freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) joined Echavarria in 13th place but unlike his teammate, Choi's best round came in the morning session. In his first round for the Orange and Blue, Choi shot a four-under 68 and followed by a 71 (-1).
Also making his debut for Florida, freshman Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) finished the day in a tie for 46th place after carding a one-over 145. McCumber shot a 73 (+2) and an even-par 72 in his first and second rounds, respectively.
Rounding out Florida's lineup was sophomore Max Kieffer (Dusseldorf, Germany). Kieffer is currently in 69th place with a 150 (72-78, +6).
Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.), who is participating as an individual, had a solid day, carding a 36-hole score of 138 (-6). Vongvanij joins teammate Alexander in a tie for seventh place, carding identical rounds of 67 and 71 on Saturday. He leads all golfers playing as individuals.
The Gators tee off for the third and final round beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. Visit www.GatorZone.com for final results.
