Women's Golf Concludes First Round of SEC Championship
Friday, April 17, 2009 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team wrapped up the first round of the SEC Championship with a team score of 307 (+23). The reigning champions are currently in 10th place with two rounds remaining.
“The team left a lot out there,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “I know they're disappointed but they are going to come out and fight back tomorrow to get it back. The thing they need to work on the most is overcoming the doubt. They are a young team that needs to work on their mental game. They have to be confident that they can do well. I think it being a lot of their first trips to the SEC Championship had a lot to do with it.”
Fittingly, the squad was led by Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.). Yadloczky is the only remaining member of the 2008 conference champion team and has proved to be a leader for the Lady Gators all season. The sophomore started slowly, making bogeys on three of her first six holes to enter the turn at three-over. She rallied back to collect seven pars and two birdies on holes 14 and 18. Yadloczky is currently tied for seventh place with a one-over 72.
“Our most experience player did well,” Briles-Hinton continued. “She fought hard and came in with a couple birdies to finish at one-over.”
Redshirt sophomore Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) carded a 78 (+7) in her first round. Schachner started off strong, making a birdie on her first hole and remaining at one-under until the 5th hole where she shot her first of two consecutive double bogeys. Unfortunately, she could not recover, carding four additional bogeys.
Joining Schachner in a tie for 36th is Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.). The redshirt sophomore also scored a 78 (+7) after carding 11 pars and seven bogeys.
Freshman Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) rounded out the Gators' lineup in a tie for 44th place, carding an eight-over 79 in her first SEC Championship appearance. Fellow freshman Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) is also tied for 44th after posting the identical score. Watts collected 11 pars, six bogeys and one double bogey.
Auburn is currently atop the team leaderboard with a team score of 289 (+5). The Tigers have three golfers who are currently at or under par following the first round. There is three-way tie for first place as Ashley Lance (Ole Miss), Haley Wilson (Auburn) and Lucy Nunn (Arkansas) all carded a one-under 70.
The 2009 SEC Championship continues on Saturday. Live scoring can be found at www.GatorZone.com and www.GolfStat.com.
