Florida In Third After Day One Of Lady Gator Invitational
Tuesday, April 7, 2009 | Women's Golf
The University of Florida women's golf team kicked off the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational on Monday with a third place finish heading into the final round. Amidst rough playing conditions, the squad carded a 36-hole score of 606 (304-302, +46).
“The conditions were tough,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “We started out with an irritating rain and then the wind poured in. I felt that the girls were a little tight today, which is due in part to the youthfulness of our team. But after a rocky start, the squad fought back hard.”
Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) currently leads the Lady Gators after carding a day-one score of 148 (+8) and is tied for fifth in her first appearance at the Lady Gator Invitational. The freshman carded identical scores of 74 (+4) in her first two rounds.
Sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) closely trailed Watts, finishing the first round of competition with a 150 (+10), good for a tie for ninth. Yadloczky carded a 75 (+5) and also entered the turn at two-over, in both of her rounds. The 2008 All-SEC selection carded one birdie in each round.
Just one stroke behind Yadloczky was Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.). Jensen is currenly tied for 13th after carding a 36-hole score of 151. The freshman carded a 79 (+7) in her first round, but improved her score by five strokes in her second with a 72. In her second round, she carded a double bogey on the 10th hole, but rallied back to collect three pars in her final eight holes.
Redshirt sophomore Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) carded a four-over 76 in her first 18 holes, but added five strokes to her score with an 81 (+9) in her second. She is currently tied for 40th with a 157 (+17).
Also making her first appearance at the Lady Gator was freshman Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.), who is currently in a tie for 74th after carding a two-round score of 167 (+27). Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.) is competing as an individual in the event, and is tied for 22nd after scoring a 154 (+14).
“We left a lot out there and we are looking forward to the challenge of getting back tomorrow and attempting to pull of the win,” Briles-Hinton continued.
Duke and Alabama are currently tied for first, just three strokes below Florida, with a 36-hole team score of 603 (+43). Campbell's Sarah Bejgrowicz carded a hole-in-one on the sixth hole during her second round of play.
The third and final round of the Lady Gator Invitational tees off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Admission to the event is free. Live scoring is available at www.GatorZone.com and www.GolfStat.com.
