W. Golf Concludes Lady Gator Invitational In Fifth Place
Tuesday, April 7, 2009 | Women's Golf
The UF women's golf team wrapped up the SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational in fifth place on Tuesday afternoon after posting a third-round team score of 321 for a tournament total of 927 (304-302-321, +87). For the second-straight day, the weather seemed to be the toughest opponent of the tournament.
“I think the team learned a valuable lesson about playing in harsh conditions,” said head coach Jill Briles-Hinton. “Today they experienced unusually very hard wind. I know that the girls are all disappointed and they feel like they let each other down. But that shows that they really care about this team, which is positive. I think that sometimes a team will take two steps forward and have to take one step back to get better. And that's what we will do.”
Auburn claimed the team title after defeating Duke in a playoff. The pair were tied following 54-holes with a 913 (+73). Duke's Amanda Blumenhurst won the individual title with a 222 (70-75-77, +12).
Sophomore Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) had the best finish among Lady Gators, joining four other golfers in a tie for fourth. Yadloczky added one stroke to her previous two rounds with a 76 on day two for a 54-hole score of 226 (75-75-76, +16).
After leading the team following day one, Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) shot an eight-over 80 for a tournament total of 228 (74-74-80, +18). The freshman had a tough day, carding only one birdie, 10 pars, three bogeys and four double bogeys. Fellow freshman Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) was one of six golfers to finish in a tie for 13th. She matched her first round score of 79 for a total score of 230 (79-72-79, +20).
Redshirt sophomore Nicole Schachner (Libertyville, Ill.) finished in a tie for 61st with a 243 (76-81-86, +33). Freshman Marika Lendl (Bradenton, Fla.) rounded out Florida's lineup in 78th place with a 254 (81-86-87, +44).
Competing as an individual, Lauren Uzelatz (Lakeland, Fla.) had a career-best finish in a tie for 19th. The redshirt freshman tied for the lead amongst individuals after improving her second round score by 4 strokes for a three-round total of 231 (73-81-77, +21).
The Lady Gator Invitational was the final regular-season tournament for the squad, as they will begin to prepare for the SEC Championships on April 17-19 in Columbia, S.C.
“The squad will definitely have extra motivation going into the SEC Championships. They'll be sad today, but they will be fine and continue to work hard.”
