Currently tied for first place, sophomore Max Kieffer (Dusseldorf, Germany) led the University of Florida men's golf team at the Olympia Fields/Fighting Illini Invitational with a 36-hole score of 139 (-1) after Saturday's second round.
The Gators improved their team score by one stroke, carding a 293 (+13), but fell a spot on the leaderboard, heading into Sunday's final round in a tie for eighth place.
“The bad news is that we lost a shot or two and moved down one spot but the good news is that we are still very much in this tournament,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “We are just one good round away from possibly winning this tournament or at least putting up a good finish so we just need to go out tomorrow and put up solid scores. Obviously, Max is playing great and is tied for the lead. We just need to get a couple back and hopefully make this a good weekend.”
Kieffer, who shot a one-under 69 on Saturday, entered the turn at two-over after tallying four bogey and two birdies, but finished his round strong by making a birdie on three of his in his final five holes, including the 17th and 18th.
Redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Columbia) finished second among Gators, carding a one-over 71 on Saturday for a 36-hole score of 145 (+5). Echavarria, who is currently tied for 16th, was shot one-under par on the back nine to bring his score back within one of par.
Senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) lost two strokes from his previous round, carding a 76 (+6) for a total score of 10-over 150, good for a tie for 38th. Alexander tallied two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey on the afternoon.
Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) and senior Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) had identical rounds, both carding a seven-over 77 on Saturday. McKenney finds himself one stroke ahead of Vongvanij after carding a 76 on the first day. McKenney is currently tied for 53rd with a 153 (+13), while Vongvanij's two-round score of 154 (+14) places him in a tie for 55th.
