Sunday, March 14, 2010 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team is currently tied for 10th place after two rounds at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters. The squad, which led the field after day one, shot a team score of 326 (+38) on Saturday for a 36-hole score of 618 (292-326, +42).
“Today was a very humbling day for us,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “It was a day full of a lot of firsts for me as a coach. I've never counted an 85 or fallen from first to tenth. Today's score was the highest score that I can remember. Obviously I am disappointed but maybe tomorrow we can come back and show a little character.”
Although he added 12 strokes to his first-round score, senior Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) continues to lead the Gators. Alexander is currently tied for sixth after sharing custody of first place after day one. He owns a 36-hole score of 148 (68-80, +4). He got off to a rough start on day two, making four straight bogeys on his first four holes. He tallied his only birdies of the day on holes five and seven before making a bogey on nine to enter the turn at three-over. A bogey on 12, double bogey on 13 and back-to-back bogeys on 15 and 16 put him at eight-over par on the day.
Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) is tied for 28th heading into the final round with a 36-hole score of 154 (+10). The senior, who carded a 74 (+2) on Friday, shot a seven-over 79 on Saturday. McKenney made up for his double bogey on four with back-to-back birdies on eight and nine to enter the turn at even par. His back nine holes included three bogeys and two double bogeys to finish at seven-over.
Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) and redshirt junior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) are tied for 49th, both with a two-round score of 158 (+14). Choi added six strokes to his first round score, carding a 10-over 82 on Saturday. After shooting a 73 (+1) in his first round, Echavarria carded a 13-over 85 in his second round.
Freshman Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) rounded out Florida's lineup, tying for 77th place with a 167 (82-85, +23).
