McKenney, Alexander Lead Gators After 36 At BancorpSouth Intercollegiate
Tuesday, April 6, 2010 | Men's Golf
UF men's golfers Tim McKenney (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Tyson Alexander (Gainesville, Fla.) hold sole custody of first and second place, respectively, after 36 holes a the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate. The pair of seniors led Florida to a first place finish with a team score of 561 (272-289, -15) with 18 holes left to play. UF's first round score of 272 (-16) was the lowest team score in any round this season.
Both McKenney and Alexander boasted career-low round scores in their first round as McKenney carded a nine-under 63 and Alexander carded an eight-under 64. They both had a previous career low of 66 prior to Monday.
“I think we had a couple seniors that decided they were tired of finishing in the middle of the field,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “Its been a year of a lot of firsts and I certainly can't remember having a 63 and 64 in the same round, which was special. However we didn't play great this afternoon and the rest of the play was average. This is not a terribly difficult golf course; the greens are in great shape. Two good rounds does not make a tournament and we have a lot more golf to play but we got off to a much better start than we have been.”
McKenney leads the field with a 36-hole score of 134 (63-71, -10), also a career best. He collected nine birdies in his first round, including four-straight and followed his first round with a one-under 71. He began with a bogey on his first hole, followed by a birdie and a bogey on his third and fourth holes. McKenney made an additional bogey before carding three birdies in six holes to finish at one-under.
One stroke away is Alexander, who is currently in second place with a career-low 36-hole score of 135 (64-71, -9). He had a strong start to his first round, making two birdies and an eagle in his first four holes. He added one more birdie to enter the turn at five-under before going on to make four more birdies. Alexander concluded his first round with a bogey on 17 to finish at eight-under par. He carded one birdie, two bogeys and the second of his two eagles on the day in his second round.
Junior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) is currently tied for 15th place with a two-round score of 144 (72-72, E). Vongvanij got off to a tough start in his first round, making bogeys on three of his first four holes, but responded by making five-straight birdies. He sandwiched a birdie in between two bogeys and made one final bogey on his final hole to finish with an even-par 72 in the morning round. He matched his first round score of 72 in the second round, carding two birdie and two bogeys.
Freshman Phillip Choi (Orlando, Fla.) carded a 36-hole score of 149 (73-76, +5) on Monday. Choi is currently tied for 44th. Fellow freshman Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) is tied for 50th with a 150 (75-75, +6).
The Gators will attempt to maintain their lead in the third and final round, which tees off beginning at 9:30 a.m. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com and www.GatorZone.com.
