No. 19 UF Women's Golf in Fourth After First Round of Cougar Classic

The No. 19 UF women's golf team is in fourth place at the conclusion of the first round of the Cougar Classic. The Gators tallied a team score of 292 (+4) at the par-72, 6,210 yard Yeamans Hall Golf Club in Hanahan, S.C.

“In general, I think the team felt like they left a couple of shots out there today,” Florida Head Coach Jan Dowling said. “With that being said, the thing that was so cool about today was that there was no emotional roller coaster going on out there. That allows us to shoot low numbers.”

The Gators were led by sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) who finished the afternoon tied for second place overall after firing a two-under 70. Piccio played the front nine at par but sank three birdies in the final seven holes to conclude the day one stroke behind leader Courtney Gunter of North Carolina.

“I played really solid golf,” Piccio said. “I was hitting a lot of greens and giving myself opportunities for birdies. I was able to birdie 15 and 17 which put me at two-under.”

“Mia was very solid,” Dowling concurred. “She hit a lot of great irons and she putted pretty well. She was hitting a ton of fairways and a lot of greens as well.”

Junior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) was consistent throughout the round as she made par on every par-3 and par-4 on the course en route to a one-over 73, leaving her in a tie for 16th. Jensen birdied the fourth hole and had two bogeys on the day.

Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.) ended her round at two-over par. Watts birdied holes 4 and 6 but then had a double bogey on No. 8 and bogeyed 9, 10 and 11 to fall to four-over. However she rebounded with pars on the next five holes and finished the back nine with consecutive birdies on 17 and 18 to move into a 11-way deadlock for 28^th place.

Senior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) got off to a strong start with two birdies in the opening six holes and was one-under at the turn. She had a rough patch with three straight bogeys on holes 11 through 13 and made a double bogey on 16 but recovered to end the round on a strong note with a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) rounded out the Florida lineup in a tie for 55^th place after shooting a four-over 76. The score was not indicative of her overall play as Lendl was even through nine and was one-over through 17 until finding trouble on the 18th hole where she eventually made triple bogey.

Lendl will be the first Gator to tee off for the second round of the Cougar Classic at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. She will be followed by Mia Piccio at 10:39, Evan Jensen at 10:48, Jessica Yadloczky at 10:57 and Andrea Watts at 11:06.
