Women's Golf Finishes Second in Labor Day Shootout

The No. 19 UF women's golf team finished second place in the inaugural Labor Day Shootout. The Gators carded a team score of 469 (+37) in a condensed 27-hole, six-team event at the par-72, 6,147-yard THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass. The event was shortened to 27 holes due to fading light.
The Gators began the day promisingly, jumping out to an early lead as junior Andrea Watts (Bradenton, Fla.), senior Jessica Yadloczky (Casselberry, Fla.) and sophomore Mia Piccio (Bacolod City, Philippines) shot two-under, one-under and even par respectively through the first nine holes of the first round.
“We couldn't have gotten off to a better start,” Florida Head Coach Jan Dowling said. “As a team, we were one-under through the front nine (in Round 1). To shoot that kind of score on that golf course is pretty darn good.”
“I felt very confident,” Watts added. “During the practice round, I had picked exactly where I wanted to be for the best approach to each pin and I found myself hitting shots to the spots I had already picked out.”
The Orange and Blue concluded the opening 18 holes two strokes behind leader Coastal Carolina and the decision was made shortly thereafter to play nine holes in the second round.
Only seven of the 38 golfers competing shot below a 40 in the final nine holes as players struggled with the demanding golf course. The Gators were unable to keep up their first round pace as they finished the event in second place.
“Visually, it's very intimidating on many tee shots,” Dowling explained. “A guy who has been playing on tour for a long time told me today this is one of the hardest courses he has ever seen from inside 100 yards. There's not a lot of room for any mistakes. You have to hit quality golf shots all the time.”
Andrea Watts was the low scorer for the Gators, firing a 27-hole score of 117 (73-44, +9) to finish in a tie for seventh place. She sank four birdies in her first 11 holes en route to being a co-leader at one-over par after the opening round.
Jessica Yadloczky collected a top-10 finish as she carded a 118 (77-41, +10). She was the only golfer in the tournament to complete the front nine without a bogey in the first round and concluded the day deadlocked in ninth place.
Mia Piccio (77-43) and junior Evan Jensen (Belleair, Fla.) (81-39) each finished with a final score of 120 (+12) while sophomore Isabelle Lendl (Goshen, Conn.) completed the event with a score of 122 (81-41).
Megan Pak (Bradenton, Fla.), playing as an individual, tallied a 121 (80-41) for UF.
Coastal Carolina, led by individual winner Courtney Boe, clinched the team title after posting a total score of 32-over 464 (306-158). Chattanooga was third place with a 27-hole score of 472 (316-156, +42).
