Vongvanij Leads Florida Men's Golf to Second Place After Day One of Bandon Dunes
Saturday, March 12, 2011 | Men's Golf
Senior Bank Vongvanij (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded a tie for second place to put the Florida Men's Golf team in second after two rounds at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore. on Friday. The Gators finished with a score of 574, eight strokes behind leader Washington.
“This course is more difficult, it's a really windy place,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “You have to keep the ball close to the ground in both your short and long games. I think the guys did a pretty decent job of that. We played okay this morning, but didn't play quite as well this afternoon.”
Vongvanij made four birdies and four bogeys for even par in round one and four birdies and two bogeys to shoot two under par in the second round. He trails Washington's Charlie Hughes, who shot nine-under par on the day.
Redshirt senior Andres Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia) made three birdies and a bogey to score a 70 in round one. He followed with four birdies and five bogeys in round two to finish the day with a 143 and a tie for fourth.
Sophomore Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) tied his career-high with six birdies in the first round for a 68 and followed with two birdies, two bogeys and two double-bogeys to finish the day at even par and tied for eighth.
Sophomore Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) made three birdies in the first round and one in the second round to finish with a 153.
“We are still in it and playing against some really good teams,” said Alexander. “Hopefully we will play well tomorrow and make this thing interesting.”
The Gators will return to the course to play their third and final round on Saturday for an 8 a.m. tee time.
