Gators in Sixth After Two Rounds at the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational
Monday, October 1, 2012 | Men's Golf
Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) and freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) both shot even-par to lead the University of Florida's men's golf team on the second day of the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational on October 1 in Olympia Fields, Ill. As a team, the Gators shot a 286 (+6) to move up to sixth place after two rounds.
The par-70, 7,080 yard course was not as daunting on the second day of the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational.
“The golf course was much easier today than it was yesterday, without the wind,” said head coach Buddy Alexander.
Florida capitalized on the calm conditions, recording the fifth-lowest score of the day, nine shots less than its first-round total.
Vogel was two-over par heading into his final two holes of the day. The Cooper City, Fla. native birdied the final two holes to finish the second round in 70 strokes (E). He recorded a team-best four birdies on the day. Vogel is tied for 24th place.
Crouch, in his second career tournament, rebounded from a tough first day by shooting a 72 (E) for the second round. The freshman birdied his final hole of the day en route to registering his lowest 18-hole score of his career. Crouch is tied for 41st place after two rounds.
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) both finished the second round in 73 strokes (+3). McCumber remains the lowest-scorer for UF with a two-round total of 143. He is currently in a tie for ninth place. Tomlinson is in a tie for 18th place with a two-round total of 145.
Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) rounded out the Gators lineup, finishing in 80 strokes (+10).
Alexander praised the team's effort, but believes the team can still improve tomorrow in the final round.
“I believe we still have a good round in us and can move up the leaderboard,” Alexander said. “Our goal is always to do the best we possibly can and score the lowest as possible.”
The final round will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Olympia Fields Country Club. Florida's first golfer will tee off at 9:10 a.m. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
