Gators Move Up to Third Place After Strong Second Day at Isleworth
Monday, October 22, 2012 | Men's Golf
University of Florida men's golf head coach Buddy Alexander thought his team could bounce back following a tough first day at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational in Windermere, Fla. His team embraced his words, firing a 286 (-2) for the second round on October 22. Fueled by their strong second round, the Gators are currently in a tie for third place with defending national champion Texas.
“Today we had several good scores,” Alexander said.
Three members of the team finished their round at or under par. In addition, UF was the only team in the 15-team field to shoot under par for the second round.
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) shot up the leaderboard following a 68 (-4) for the second round. Spearheaded by an eagle and three birdies against one bogey, McCumber moved up 20 places and currently is in a three-way tie for second place. The Ponte Vedra, Fla. native trails California's Michael Kim by three strokes after recording the best score of the field on the second day of competition.
Fellow senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) also made a significant jump in the leaderboards. Vogel recorded five birdies against three bogeys to finish the second round in 70 strokes (-2). He completed his final five holes at three-under par. Vogel sits in a tie for seventh place with two others, moving up 15 places since yesterday.
Sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) was the final Gator to finish his round at or under par. The second-year golfer finished at even-par, good enough to put him in a tie for 12th place.
“Our three best players really turned it up today,” Alexander said. “Tyler was terrific, T.J. had a great rally at the end, and J.D. was solid, as well.”
Senior Tommy Mou (Bradenton, Fla.) finished his second round in 76 strokes (+4). Mou excelled on the longest holes at the par-72, 7,544 yard course. He tallied two eagles and one birdie against one bogey on the four par-5 holes.
Freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot a 78 (+6) to round out the Gators lineup.
“There is still a lot of golf left to be played,” Alexander stated. “We are playing with some of the best teams out there and need to have five good scores tomorrow.”
The third and final round of the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational will begin at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
