Monday, September 10, 2012 | Men's Golf
Florida's men's golf team was the only team to shoot par for the second round of The Invitational at the Ocean Course, extending their lead to 20 strokes on September 10 in Kiawah Island, S.C. The Gators, ranked No. 12 in the coaches' poll and No.8 by Golf Week, shot a 288 (E) as a team.
"We had another solid day,” said head coach Buddy Alexander.
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) led the team with a 70 (-2) on the day. McCumber recorded five birdies on at the par-72, 7,200 yard course, a team-best. He is currently in second place individually with a two-round total of 142 (-2), trailing Georgia Southern's Scott Wolfes by two strokes.
Also in the hunt for the individual crown is senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.). Vogel carded a 71 (-1) to bring his two-round total to 144 (E). The 2012 U.S. Amateur Public Links Champion sits in third place going into tomorrow's final round.
“Our top-two, Tyler McCumber and T.J. Vogel played some great golf today,” Alexander said.
Freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico), both in their first collegiate tournaments, rounded out the Gators counting towards today's team score. Crouch shot even-par, while Gavino finished in 75 strokes (+3). Crouch, with a two-round total of 146, is tied for fourth, while Gavino is in seventh place with a two-round total of 147.
Rounding out the Gator lineup was the hometown duo of sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Alex Slaton (Gainesville, Fla.). Tomlinson shot a 76 (+4) to bring his total to 148, good enough for a tie for eighth place. Slaton, in his first tournament of his college career, shot an 81 (+9) on the day.
The final round is scheduled to begin tomorrow morning at The Ocean Course. Live scoring will be available on www.golftstat.com as well as www.CofCSports.com.
