McCumber Leads UF on Day One of Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational

The University of Florida's men's golf team currently sits in a tie for seventh place at the Olympia Fields/Illini Invitational after recording a 295 (+15) on the first day of the event, September 30, in Olympia Fields, Ill. Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) carded an opening round 70 (E), putting him in a tie for second place.
"This is a really good golf course,” said head coach Buddy Alexander. “It was pretty difficult, especially for our younger players with its quick greens.”
Starting on the 10th hole, McCumber was two-over 35 in his first nine holes. McCumber rallied in his final nine, recording birdies on the fifth and seventh holes to finish at even-par at the par-70, 7,080 yard course. The senior is tied with five others for second place.
Sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) finished in 72 strokes (+2), good enough for a tie for ninth place after one round. Tomlinson is coming off his fourth top-10 finish of his career at The Invitational at The Ocean Course.
“Tyler and J.D. put together two decent scores,” Alexander said.
Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico) rounded out the Gators contributing to the team score on day one. Vogel recorded three birdies on his way to a 76 (+6), while Gavino shot a 77 (+7).
Freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) shot an 80 (+10) to complete the UF lineup.
The Gators will be the first team to tee off tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. at the Olympia Fields Country Club. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
