Florida Leads by Four After the First Day of The Invitational at The Ocean Course

The University of Florida men's golf team shot a 289 (+1) to take a four-stroke lead on the first day of The Invitational at the Ocean Course on September 9 in Kiawah Island, S.C. Three Gators shot even-par to pace the team at the par-72, 7,200 yard course.
"The team got off to a good start to the season," said head coach Buddy Alexander. "There is still a lot of golf left to play though."
Senior Tyler McCumber (Ponte Vedra, Fla.), redshirt sophomore Santiago Gavino (San Luis Potosi, Mexico), and sophomore J.D. Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.) each finished the day in 72 strokes (E). The Florida trio currently sit in a three-way tie for second place. Today also marked Gavino's first round as a member of the UF golf team.
"We had a solid performance by our guys," Alexander said. "I am extremely proud of Santiago Gavino after starting three-over after the first four holes and coming back the way he did."
Senior T.J. Vogel (Cooper City, Fla.) was not too far behind the Gator trio, recording a 73 (+1). Vogel, who was recently recognized as one of the top 10 players in the country to watch this season by Golf Week, is currently tied for fifth place.
Rounding out the day for the Gators were freshman A.J. Crouch (Jacksonville, Fla.) and redshirt sophomore Alex Slaton (Gainesville, Fla.). Both playing in their first tournaments of their collegiate careers, Crouch shot a 74 (+2), while Slaton registered an 80 (+8).
Play resumes tomorrow morning at The Ocean Course and continues through Tuesday, September 11. Live scoring will be available on www.golftstat.com as well as www.CofCSports.com.
