Florida Women's Golf Finishes 14th at the Tar Heel Invitational
Sunday, October 12, 2014 | Women's Golf
The Florida women's golf team concluded play at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational on the par-72 UNC Finley Golf Course on Sunday. In a stacked 18-team field, the Gators were forced to count all four of their scores, as they only took four golfers, and finished in 14th place with a 912 (293-309-310) team total.
Gator sophomore Maria Torres, competing in her first tournament of the 2014-15 season, led the Orange and Blue by finishing +9 (225) and tied for 35th place. Freshman Taylor Tomlinson led the Florida quartet through the first two rounds but shot an 80 on the final day of competition to finish at +10 (226) and tied for 42nd place.
After Round 2 was suspended due to weather on Saturday, play resumed on Sunday morning. Duke edged out South Carolina by a pair of strokes to bring home the team title with a -2 (862) total, while Lauren Diaz-Yi from Virginia claimed the individual title at 7-under par (209).
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' performance:
“It was not a great event for us, but we certainly are a lot more clear on what we need to improve upon moving forward. There's no doubt we had no room for error this week without a drop score, but we still could have done a better job of executing.”
On moving forward:
“We don't have a lot of turnaround time before our next event (at The Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., from Oct. 24-26), so it will be important to be focused over the next week and a half.”
