The Gator women's golf team concluded play on a high note at the Powerade Cougar Classic on Tuesday, moving up to 12th place in its season-opening tournament. Freshman Taylor Tomlinson and junior Ursa Orehek, who both shot 6-over par in round 2, each rebounded on the final day with even par to lead the Gators in round 3 at the par-72 Yeamans Hall Club.
Round 2 team leader sophomore Karolina Vlckova shot an 80 (+8) on Tuesday, while the 2012 Cougar Classic individual champion, senior Camilla Hedberg, carded a 75 (+3). Sophomore newcomer Kelly Grassel recorded a 75 (+3) in round 3 on her way to recording the Gators' low tournament score (221) in her Orange and Blue debut, finishing tied for 38th.
Head Coach Emily Glaser's squad shaved four strokes off its team total from round 2 to wrap up the tournament in 12th place with an 889 team total. SEC opponent Arkansas held off UCLA to take the team title, finishing 18-under par (846), while Sandy Choi (Duke) won the individual title at 11-under par (205).
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' season-opening tournament the Cougar Classic:
“Overall, it wasn't a great event for us, but, despite that, we will take a lot of positives from our experience. I'm happy that Taylor [Tomlinson] and Ursa [Orehek] finished strong today. Everyone contributed this week and everyone had their own individual successes even though the scores weren't great.”
On moving forward:
“We have a lot to work on over the next few weeks before the Tar Heel Invitational and I feel confident that we can improve.”
