Tuesday, January 27, 2015 | Women's Golf
The Gator women's golf team teed off the 2015 spring season on a positive note at the Florida Challenge on Monday, finishing in third place. The Gators' used season-best finishes from every student-athlete to finish +24 (303-297–600).
Every member of the Gator squad locked in season-best finishes, including the quartet of Camilla Hedberg, Karolina Vlckova, Maria Torres and Kelly Grassel, who each finished in the top five at the event. Hedberg led the Orange and Blue, using a season-low round of 73, to finish at +3 (74-73—147) and tie for third overall. Vlckova, competing as an individual, notched a career-best finish, tying teammate Hedberg for third (74-73—147). Sophomores Grassel and Torres matched each other shooting +4 (75-73—148) to tie for fifth at the par-72 Black Diamond Ranch Quarry Course.
Miami took home the in-state competition title, shooting +17 (291-302–593), and beating out tournament host USF in a one-hole playoff. Ashley Burke from USF took home the individual crown with an even-par score of 144 (71-73).
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' spring opener:
“Well, it wasn't the finish that we hoped for, but I learned a lot about our team today. There was a ton of useful information that we can take with us moving forward.”
On Camilla Hedberg and Karolina Vlckova finishing T3:
“I am really happy for Camilla and her performance after not competing since September. The conditions were really tough today, cold and windy, and she played like the veteran she is. Karolina also had a great tournament, she fought hard and was grinding out there.”
On the positive lessons learned:
“It was great to improve in the afternoon round. In both rounds we didn't have a good fourth score to count and that held us back. Overall, I thought there were a lot of positives for this team to take with them to California in a few weeks.”
