Monday, October 19, 2015 | Men's Golf
The 18th-ranked University of Florida men's golf team shot the lowest round of the day on Monday at the Tavistock Collegiate to secure an eighth-place position entering the tournament's final round.
The Gators shot 14 strokes better than their opening round, posting a 1-over 289 in Round 2 to advance four places in the standings. UF totals a 16-over 592 through two days of competition.
Sophomore Alejandro Tosti led the Gators at the Isleworth Country Club on Monday, advancing 23 places on the leaderboard after firing a 2-under 70. With a total of even-par 144, he's in a six-way tie for seventh place.
Junior Ryan Orr carded a 1-under 71 to earn a share of 19th with a total of +3 (147).
Freshmen Jorge Garcia, Sam Horsfield and Kyler Tate all recorded rounds of +2 (74). Garcia has +6 (150), Horsfield has a +7 (151) and Tate has a +10 (154) with one round of play remaining.
The only team under par, California holds the lead with a 7-under 569. The Golden Bears' Colin Morikawa also remains in first individually with a 7-under 137.
The Gators have one last chance to advance on the leaderboard when they return to the Isleworth Country Club on Tuesday for the third and final round. UF begins teeing off at 8 a.m.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On Round 2:
“We had a great practice session and a great team meeting last night, and I told the guys in the meeting that I knew that they were going to come out and play well today. We just needed to figure out how to do that in the first round, but they came out really focused this morning. Everyone had a great practice session and got off to a great start on the front nine and carried it through in some really tough conditions on the back nine. We had the low round of the day in tough conditions, and that's exactly what I'm looking for from this team, so I'm proud of them.”
On sophomore Alejandro Tosti:
“The biggest thing for Ale was composing himself after that 7 he made on his second hole yesterday. He's probably played better than anyone in the whole field since then. He's learning that when he can keep his mind straight and keep focused on the next, most important thing instead of thinking about what's already happened, great things can happen. I'm really proud of him. Birdying two out of his last three holes was huge for him and huge for the team.”
