Florida Women’s Golf Finishes Second at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate
Tuesday, February 24, 2015 | Women's Golf
The Gators' women's golf team made a national statement in the final round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans, La., on Tuesday, beating out five of Golfweek's top-25 ranked teams. As a team, Florida matched its season-low score of 288 to tie second-ranked UCLA for second place, the team's best finish of the season. UF improved by a whopping 13 strokes in Round 3, the second-best performance of the day, with three Gators landing in the top-10.
Freshman Taylor Tomlinson fired a one-under 71 in the final round to propel herself up the leaderboard and turn in a collegiate-best sixth place finish. Sophomore Maria Torres showed consistency throughout the tournament, shooting 74-74-73 to share seventh place. Senior Camilla Hedberg enjoyed a tremendous final round by leading the team with a season-low two-under par 70, on her way to a season-best 54-hole score of 222 and a tie for ninth place.
LSU took home the team title with an 874 total, at the par-72 6,189-yard English Turn Golf Club. In the individual competition, LSU's Madelene Sagstrom and Carolina Nistrup recorded totals of 212 to take a share of the tournament crown. The Orange and Blue will now return to Gainesville, Fla., for its lone home tournament, the SunTrust Gator Invitational on March 6-8.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' second-place finish:
“I'm really pleased with our finish today. It's great to play your best golf on the last day. Especially, given the weather conditions, our play was outstanding.”
On battling the tough conditions:
“We knew all week that the conditions would be bad today and the team prepared well, mentally and physically. There were no complaints today, and the temperatures were barely in the 40s, so I was happy with the toughness we showed.”
On Taylor Tomlinson and Camilla Hedberg recording sub-par rounds today:
“I'm happy for Taylor and her play this week. She was very consistent and mature on the course. Also, it was great to see Camilla score well today. She (Camilla) has had her patience tested over the last few months, but she continues to work hard and show her resilience.”
Where the team will go from here:
“We continue to get better a little at a time, but it doesn't always show in your scores. Today, though, it did and I'm happy about that for our team. We look forward to learning this week and preparing for the SunTrust Gator Invitational next weekend.”
