Florida in Second After Opening Round of the SunTrust Gator Women’s Golf Invitational
Friday, March 6, 2015 | Women's Golf
The Gator women's golf team opened competition at its lone home tournament, the SunTrust Gator Invitational, on Friday. As a team, Florida finished the first day of competition in second place by recording a team total of +14 (297). Sophomore Kelly Grassel led the Orange and Blue by tying her season-best score of +1 (71), and sits in second place after the opening round.
A total of four Gators fought into the top 20 during Round 1, with sophomore Karolina Vlckova tying for ninth overall carding a +4 (74), equaling senior Anna Young, who is competing as an individual. Senior Camilla Hedberg tied for 17th, carding a +5 (75), to round out the Gators in the top-20.
The 15-team field features three of Golfweek's top-25 teams, with No. 11 Arizona emerging on top after day one, leading Florida by just two strokes at the 6,002-yard Mark Bostick Golf Course. Round 2 play on the par-70 course is set to tee off at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
Thoughts on the Gators' opening round:
“I am happy with our attitudes today and every girl played hard all of the way to the end. We didn't manage particularly well as a team and that is something we talked a little bit about after the round and that we would like to improve for tomorrow. Overall, it's a solid start and we are excited for the weekend.”
On playing through difficult conditions:
“The course was challenging as the scores would indicate. The weather was a bit of a factor. You have to think your way through every shot on this course and I know this is a smart team that is capable of smart golf.”
Sophomore Kelly Grassel:
On leading the team in Round 1:
“I'm happy with the way I managed my game today, because this golf course is challenging for us.”
On expectations for Round 2:
“Tomorrow, I just want to stick to my plan and stay patient. Every day is different and I'm going to focus on the process rather than results.”
