Florida Opens Chris Schenkel Invitational in Sixth Place
Friday, March 20, 2015 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – The University of Florida men's golf team matched its season-low to-par round score in the opening round of the Chris Schenkel Invitational Friday, recording a 5-under 283 to land in sixth place among the 15 teams.
J.D. Tomlinson and A.J. Crouch shot 3-under 69s to tie for 11th and lead the Gators. The pair sits only one stroke back of a seven-way tie for fourth place.
Ryan Orr contributed a solid round, shooting even-par (72), while Ryan Celano added a +1 (73).
Vanderbilt posted a 15-under 273 to rise to the top of the team leaderboard. Auburn's Ben Schlottman leads the individual competition with a 6-under 66.
The Gators return to Forest Heights Country Club Saturday for the second and third rounds. Round 2 play begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. The third round was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been moved to Saturday afternoon because of impending inclement weather.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On the team's Round 1 performance:
“Our focus was our attitude, being resilient, playing hard and trying our best on every shot. I didn't get to see Conor (Richardson) as much today, but all five of the guys that were playing for the team achieved that. We tied our low round of the year again, and I think our attitudes are the reason why.”
On continuing to focus on attitudes in Saturday's final two rounds:
“That's all we're focusing our results on this week – just on our attitudes and our effort – and I know the guys are really buying into making that the most important thing. I think if we keep that up, this team's really going to be able to achieve some fun things before the year is over.”
On J.D. Tomlinson:
“He really found a comfort zone, and he knows what he's doing well, and he knows what not to do. His game is so mature. He's great.”
On A.J. Crouch:
“A.J. (Crouch) showed a ton of maturity today because he double bogeyed his 10th and 11th holes, which is obviously a ton of adversity. For him to come back with an eagle on the 12th hole was what we're working on. That's the team we want to be, and he was a great example of that today.”
