Florida Slips to 12th on Final Day at Schenkel Invitational
Sunday, March 22, 2015 | Men's Golf
STATESBORO, Ga. – After a slow start in Round 2 of the Schenkel Invitational Saturday, the University of Florida men's golf team shot slightly better in the afternoon's third round, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the competition. With a final score of 3-under 861, the Gators wrapped up the tournament in Statesboro in 12th place.
Florida opened the day with a score of 3-over 291, and then came back in the afternoon with a 1-under 287. Despite the improvement, the Gators fell from 10th to 12th as the other teams posted low scores in the final round.
The Orange and Blue's highest finisher, J.D. Tomlinson, collected his seventh top-25 finish of the year. After recording a +3 (75) in Round 2, Tomlinson shot seven strokes better in the afternoon to finish the event with a 4-under 212 and share of 24th place.
Ryan Orr posted rounds of 72 and 74 on Saturday, totaling a score of +2 (218), which put him in a tie for 50th. Eric Banks recovered from a rough first round by contributing back-to-back under-par rounds to finish +5 (221). A.J. Crouch carded a 4-over 76 and 3-over 75 during the day's final rounds to finish tied for 62nd with a 4-over 220.
Auburn captured the team and individual crowns, recording a 41-under 823 to edge out SEC foe Vanderbilt by one stroke. The Tigers' Daniel Stringfellow recorded a 12-under 204 to also win by one shot, beating out his two teammates and two Vanderbilt players who all tied for second.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On the team's performance Saturday:
“It was a long day with 36 holes, but the weather was beautiful, and the course was playing really easy. We went around the team after the day was over, and everyone said they had a good attitude and tried their hardest on every shot. Our golf just wasn't good enough. We got beat. I can live with that. The guys gave it their all and tried their best. We just have to find a way to get better.”
On the takeaways from the tournament:
“We seem to make so many more mistakes than the elite teams, and getting beat by 38 shots this week by Auburn puts it in perspective of where we need to be.”
On J.D. Tomlinson's seven-stroke improvement between Rounds 2 and 3:
“He struggled a little bit in the second round, but he's a bulldog. He never quits, and he's been playing such good golf for a really long stretch of time. That's his 11th round out of the last 12 that's been par or better. We rely on him so much. The other guys have just got to get better so that they can help him out.”
