Florida Women’s Golf Takes Home Title at the Briar’s Creek Invitational
Tuesday, March 24, 2015 | Women's Golf
The Gators' women's golf team brought home the Briar's Creek Invitational title in record fashion in Johns Island, S.C., on Tuesday. Florida scored +2 (866) as a team to beat out Miami +4 (868) for the top position, and finished 10 strokes ahead of third-place finisher Texas Tech and the 17-team field.
Sophomore Kelly Grassel narrowly missed out on the individual title, finishing second overall with a collegiate-best (-4) 212 total, at the par-72 Golf Club at Briar's Creek. Miami's Daniela Darquea scored an impressive 7-under par in Round 3 to lock down the individual crown by carding a 207 total, at the 6,101-yard course.
Three Gators joined Grassel in the top-25, sophomore Karolina Vlckova (217) tied for sixth, freshman Taylor Tomlinson used a collegiate-best score of 219 to tie for 12th, while sophomore Maria Torres tied for 21st (221).
The Orange and Blue recorded its lowest three-round team score (866) this season, and the lowest 18-hole score of 282 in Round 3, tied the fifth-lowest team score in school history. The Gators' team title is the program's first tournament title since the 2013 Cougar Classic, as well as the 95th team title in program history.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On winning the tournament:
“I'm really happy for the team, they did a great job today. We knew we had the lead going into today and I was really happy with the way they handled the pressure. They played tough and didn't back away from the challenge. Each player had a solid round today and it's a real testament to the depth and consistency of this team.”
On Kelly Grassel finishing in second:
“It was a great tournament for Kelly. She's been playing some great golf this spring, but had yet to put three good rounds together like she did this week. She learned from her experience at the Gator Invitational, when she was at the top of the leaderboard, and she did a much better job this week of staying in the present and not getting ahead of herself. Kelly was solid tee to green and this even should keep her confidence moving in the right direction.”
