ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The University of Florida men's golf team placed a trio of Gators in the top 25 on its way to earning a shared seventh-place finish at the SEC Championship on Sunday.
As a team, Florida shot +4 (284) in the final round, +2 (842) overall, at the Seaside Course to tie Georgia for the No. 7 spot.
J.D. Tomlinson shot +2 (72) in Round 3 to tie for 11th with a 2-under 208. It was his ninth top-25 finish of the year.
Alejandro Tosti posted the Orange and Blue's only under-par round of the day, a 1-under 69. His tournament total of 1-under 209 earned him a tie for 17th. Since enrolling at UF at the start of the spring semester, the freshman has placed in the top 25 in all but one tournament.
Eric Banks carded a 1-over 71 to wrap up the tournament +1 (211), good for a tie for 23rd place.
After recording a 4-over 74 in the last round, A.J. Crouch finished the tournament tied for 44th with a score of 6-over 216. Ryan Orr shot +2 (72) in Round 3, +12 (222) overall, to place 62nd.
LSU won the SEC title with a 13-under 827, edging out runner-up squads Vanderbilt and South Carolina by three strokes apiece. The Gamecocks' Matthew NeSmith won the individual contest by six shots with a 54-hole total of 14-under 196.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On how the team played:
“I'm so proud of the guys. We've come so far this year, and it's a completely different team than we had in September. They have an attitude and a will about them that's really impressive, and it's fun to be around. I don't think we played our best golf this week, but we hung so tough and tried on every shot, and I think we had a pretty good finish.”
On wrapping up his first SEC Championship:
“It's such an honor to be in the SEC, and they really did a heck of a job at the tournament this week. It's a wonderful venue, and the group of teams is truly elite. This is where I want to be. I've always wanted to compete against the best, and that's what I'm doing now. It's fun to watch the guys out there because it's a great golf course that really demands a lot of you. We hit some really good shots coming down the stretch today. There's nowhere else I'd rather be.”
