Vlckova Headed to NCAA Championship, Gators Finish Eighth at Regionals
Saturday, May 9, 2015 | Women's Golf
RALEIGH, N.C. – Although the University of Florida women's golf team fell short of qualifying for the NCAA Championship on Saturday, Karolina Vlckova qualified as an individual for the national championship tournament.
Saving the best for last, the Gators recorded their lowest round of the NCAA Regional on Saturday, a +8 (296). Despite the improvement, Florida's total of 38-over 902 wasn't low enough to break into the group of six that will advance. UF finished in eighth place.
Vlckova matched her season-best round score, firing a 2-under 70 in Saturday's final round. Her total of +1 (217) earned her eighth place in the individual contest and a bid to the NCAA Championship. She'll join Coastal Carolina's Lena Schaeffner and Furman's Taylor Totland as the trio of individuals advancing from the Raleigh Regional.
In her final round as a Gator, senior Anna Young carded a 3-over 75 to total +7 (223) and finish tied for 18th. It was her fourth top-25 finish of the year.
Like Young, Maria Torres also shot a 3-over 75 on Saturday. She and Taylor Tomlinson (who shot 4-over 76 in Round 3) both finished the tournament +15 (231) and tied for 59th.
Camilla Hedberg wrapped up her college career with a round of +15 (87).
South Carolina collected the team title with a score of 13-over 877, while LSU's Madelene Sagstrom won the individual competition by six strokes with a total score of 8-under 208.
Vlckova will travel to Bradenton, Fla., to compete in the national championship, which will be played May 22-27 at The Concession Golf Club.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On the Gators' performance in the NCAA Regional:
“Well, it's an emotional day. This certainly isn't how we saw the season coming to and end and I am disappointed for the team. I know they fought hard today but it wasn't enough of a group effort this week to be successful. Today in itself wasn't the issue, we dug ourselves a hole the past two days that was just too much to recover from.”
On Karolina Vlckova qualifying for the NCAA Championship as an individual:
“I'm happy for Karolina to be going to Nationals. She has had a wonderful sophomore season and has carried the team since March. Obviously, it's bittersweet for her. Karolina is the definition of a team player and played her heart out this week for her teammates.”
On wrapping up the team's season:
“It's an unfortunate end to the year. This team has come a long way since the fall, where we battled through some adversity. The good news is that we learned a lot about ourselves this year as a team. I think the girls who are returning are really starting to understand what it takes to be successful at this level and the effort and character it takes to be a successful team.”
