Tuesday, June 2, 2015 | Men's Golf
University of Florida men's golfer Ryan Orr wrapped up his sophomore season with a tie for 38th at the NCAA Championship on Monday. He carded a 5-over 77 in the fourth round, finishing the tournament with a 72-hole score of 7-over 295.
Orr opened the day with a birdie before shooting an 8 on the par-4 second hole. He quickly recovered, collecting an eagle on the par-5 third hole.
A few bogeys and a double bogey put Orr at +6 approaching the turn. However, he got off to a hot start on the back nine, recording three birdies in holes 10-14. He went on to finish the last nine holes at -1, for a total of +5 (77) for the round.
SMU's Bryson Dechambeau shot a 1-under 71 on Monday to win the national title with an 8-under 280.
As a team, the Gators finished tied for 28th after Round 3. Orr represented the Orange and Blue in the final round of stroke play Monday by qualifying as an individual.
The top-eight teams following the fourth round advance to match play to decide the team champion. Quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be played Tuesday, while the championship match is set for Wednesday.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On Ryan Orr's play in Round 4:
“It was a roller coaster of a day. We had a ton of fun, though. We talked a lot about this year, and we were glad we got a taste of this because we want to be back here next year so badly. I'm really proud of him, he's done so many great things to get better this year. His future is big-time.”
On the experience of Ryan Orr competing in NCAA play for the first time:
“It's absolutely huge. I think the best part about it is that he got a taste of what it's all about and saw how amazing this tournament could be and what good play could do. That's going to leave him hungry to keep improving over the next year.”
Sophomore Ryan Orr:
On his performance in Round 4:
“I started off pretty well. I birdied the first hole with a really long putt, which was a great way to start. Then, I made a quadruple bogey on my second hole, which rattled me a little bit, but I knew that there were some birdie holes out there, and I just stayed patient. Then, I eagled the next hole, which was huge and got me back to 1-over, and then I made a pretty bad error on 7,8,9. I made the turn at 6-over, but I never gave up. I kept going and made three birdies and almost had another one. Then, we had a rain delay. After about an hour rain delay, I came out and hit in the hazard on 17 and made a double (bogey), which was disappointing to end my round like that, but, in the end, I played okay and I battled back, and I'm proud of that.”
On the experience of competing in NCAA play for the first time:
“It was awesome. The entire experience this week was everything that I thought it would be and more. The fact that all the camera crews were out here, the unbelievable course, all of the volunteers and the support we get here – it's one of the coolest things I've ever experienced in my life, and I can't wait to get back here next year.”
