Saturday, September 12, 2015 | Men's Golf
The University of Florida men's golf team shot five strokes better in the second round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate on Saturday, led by freshman Sam Horsfield's round of 3-under 69.
As a team, the Gators posted an 11-over 299 at The Farm Golf Club Saturday, moving up to 11th place with a total of +27 (603).
Horsfield's 69 gave him a share of fifth place entering the final round with a total of -1 (143). Sophomore Alejandro Tosti added a 5-over 77 and holds a two-round total of 8-over 152.
Freshman Kyler Tate showed the most improvement in Round 2, shooting seven shots better (3-over 75) than in Friday's opening round. He and freshman Blake Dyer both total a 13-over 157, as Dyer shot +6 (78) on Saturday.
Freshman Jorge Garcia posted a 7-over 79 and is +11 (155) going into Round 3.
Alabama leads the tourney with a 2-over 578. With a 5-under 139, the Crimson Tide's David Riley is tied with Clemson's Stephen Behr for first in the individual contest.
The Gators' final opportunity to advance on the leaderboard will come Sunday, when they return to The Farm Golf Club for the third and final round.
Head Coach JC Deacon:
On Round 2:
“It was a slight improvement. It was nice to see the work that the guys put in yesterday afternoon pay off a little bit. We were the last team here yesterday afternoon, and the guys really did put in some focused work, but we're not playing very well and obviously not very competitive. It has to be better tomorrow, and we have to go home and work hard.”
On Kyler Tate's seven-stroke improvement:
“Kyler (Tate) is a great player. He's going to be a fantastic player for us. It's just a matter of him getting comfortable, and I think that showed a little bit today. He actually played a little bit better than that 75 shows.”
On Sam Horsfield's second-round 69:
“That's who Sam (Horsfield) is. He's a phenomenal player and a phenomenal kid. We talked a little bit about his determination and attitude last night, and he came out determined to play great today. That's exactly what he did. He's becoming a leader for us already, and I'm really, really glad we have him.”
