Gators Claim Title in Fall Finale at Tavistock Collegiate
Tuesday, October 18, 2016 | Men's Golf
WINDERMERE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's golf team closed out its fall season with a win at the Tavistock Collegiate on Tuesday. Florida shot a -4 (284) to finish at -20 (844), winning the tournament by 11 strokes.
This win is the Gators' second in four tournaments this season, finishing in the top-five in every tournament appearance. With the victory, Florida has matched last year's team win total.
Twenty-under-par is the Gators' best score to-par this season, and the best score in a victory under Head Coach J.C. Deacon.
Junior Alejandro Tosti shot a +1 (73) third round, and captured the individual title at -8 (208). The win is Tosti's first outright and second overall, with the first coming at last year's FGCU Classic where he tied with UCF's Manuel Elvira.
Sophomore Jorge Garcia picked up five birdies en route to a -3 (69) third round, propelling him into a tie for seventh place at -5 (211).
Sophomore Sam Horsfield and freshman Andy Zhang carded four birdies apiece in the third round. Horsfield finished in 10th place at -3 (213), while Zhang finished tied for 14th at E (216).
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
(on the team's performance)
"Resilient is the word that I can think of. All of our guys believed in what they were doing, and their ability, and hung in there tough. Jorge Garcia was huge for us, he played well from the start and carried it through the whole round. Having that low under-par score was massive for us. All five of our guys contributed in their own way this week and the belief we have as a group is amazing. This group really believes we can achieve some amazing things if we focus on what we're doing and what we can control, and we did that this week and got a pretty convincing victory against a great field."
(on Alejandro Tosti)
"He shot the best score in the field and that says it all. That's what all the players in the field are trying to do, and Alejandro was able to do that this week. I think if you ask him, there are some things that he wants to improve on, but no one is denying his world-class talent. He's a huge part of where we're going, and we all really appreciate the scores he shot this week. He helped us all win this tournament."
(on what winning two fall tournaments does for the team going into the spring season)
"I think today more than anything helps the team. This core group that's been together for the last one and a half years has had a tough time closing tournaments out. Today was a big day for us. We didn't really talk about that too much yesterday or this morning, but the guys knew it, and we knew it. We needed to finish the tournament off and play the final round and I think we made a pretty big statement today. There's no better way to go into the offseason than to put a big 'W' on the board."
Junior Alejandro Tosti
(on his win and his good performances in the last two tournaments of the fall season)
"It was good to be in that position again, to be in first place. The week before Nike (Golf Collegiate Invitational), I was in Mexico and I had a really good learning experience in the World Amateur Team Championships. I practiced a few new things and in the next two tournaments, and saw better results. I'm really happy with the result I had today, but I still have a lot to work on."
