Alejandro Tosti tied a career-low with a total score of 206 in the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational.
Florida Claims Second at Nike Golf Invitational
Tuesday, October 4, 2016 | Men's Golf
FORT WORTH, TX. – The University of Florida men's golf team clinched second place at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational Tuesday after a final round of +8 (288). The Gators have now finished in the top five of their first three tournaments.
Junior Alejandro Tosti shot an even-par 70 final round to finish in third place individually. Tosti finished with a total tournament score of 206, tying a career-low set at last year's Sea Best Invitational.
Vanderbilt University secured the victory with a final score of -1 (839). Stanford's Maverick McNealy claimed the individual medal with an -8 (202) performance.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon
(on what made the tournament especially difficult on day three) "The wind was blowing from the first tee until we finished. The wind is going to be the toughest condition that you face in golf and it was gusting all day long and that made it tough. The course was pretty difficult today. It was a really good test."
(on the team's performance) "I really appreciated how the guys fought. I don't think they all had their best today, but they fought their tails off the last five, six, seven holes and really played some good golf. Alejandro (Tosti) had a heck of a day shooting even-par, and I know he didn't finish the way that he wanted to, but that was a great score and to finish third for him is awesome. Jorge (Garcia) and Gordon (Neale) contributed two great rounds again. They played well, but I think all of us are a little bit sick of finishing second."
(on playing well against high-level competition) "This was an unbelievable tournament that Nike put on and an unbelievable field. Those are some of the best teams that there are and our guys handled themselves at a very high level to finish 11 shots ahead of third place. So it's good, it's really good golf, a good finish for us. But we don't want to finish second, this team wasn't built to finish second. We all want to start winning and we've just got to keep working and doing the things we're doing and I know it's coming soon."
