Kuhlman and Woolcock Claim Singles Titles at Duke Bonk Invite
Sunday, September 18, 2016 | Women's Tennis
Florida won a total of four titles at the season-opening event.
Cary, NC – UF junior Josie Kuhlman and senior Belinda Woolcock both won singles titles in their respective draws at the 2016 Duke Bonk Invite held at the Cary Tennis Park on Sunday. The two singles championships combined with the two doubles titles captured by Gators on Saturday capped a terrific first tournament of the season for Florida.
Kuhlman had the most dominating win in a final on Sunday, from a score standpoint, as she defeated Miami's Maci Epstein, 6-3, 6-3, in the final of the BLUE draw.
Woolcock captured the YELLOW draw championship after a hard-fought three-setter over TCU's No. 57 Donika Bashota, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
The other three Gators involved in a final either dropped a tiebreak or went three sets before falling.
Senior Spencer Liang ended her tournament with a victory, defeating NC State's Adriana Reami, 6-2, 6-2, and took third place in the WHITE draw.
Quoting Head Coach Roland Thornqvist:
On the Gators' performance on the third and final day of their season-opening event: "For the first tournament of the year, we had a great showing. We played at a really high level. We won two trophies in doubles (on Saturday) and two trophies today, with Belinda (Woolcock) and Josie (Kuhlman) playing great tennis. Even the players who lost today fought really hard and played really well. I'm really pleased with the six players who we brought to this tournament – their energy and level of play was commendable."
On what the team will focus on in practice: "I think we could improve our overall fitness a bit, but that being said, we were terrific in three-set matches over the weekend which is a great indicator as to how strong we are. I'm really pleased. This was a great start to the year by this veteran team and we look forward to when we return to the court after taking a couple days away and get ready for the Riviera All-American."
