FLUSHING, N.Y. – Florida junior Brooke Austin dropped a hard-fought three-setter in the opening round of the American Collegiate Invitational played the Billie Jean King Tennis Center on Thursday.
Austin, who competed last week with Gator senior Kourtney Keegan in the main draw doubles of the U.S. Open, returned to the famed tennis courts where she was one of the top eight collegiate players selected to compete in this prestigious single-elimination singles event.
Austin battled Texas' Breaunna Addison, the No. 4 seed, and pushed her before falling, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-4. The match, which lasted two hours and six minutes, was the only one that went three sets on Thursday.
"It felt really weird to be out there because I haven't played a singles match since July because I had a procedure on my back," Austin shared. "I've really just been working on doubles with Kourtney (Keegan). It was fun to play. I absolutely had my opportunities during the match. I felt a little rusty."
