Sierra Brooks (-7) wins second individual title in third event as a Gator
NEW ORLEANS, La. -- The Gators led the Allstate Sugar Bowl from wire-to-wire capturing their first title of the season by nine strokes at 9-over par.
This is the second time in three years Florida is coming home from New Orleans with the trophy after finishing round three with the lowest score on the course at 2-over par.
For the second time in three events as a Gator, Sierra Brooks will be taking a trophy of her own. Brooks (-7) won the individual title by four strokes shooting under par rounds all three rounds.
She was as low as 9-under par after birding three of the first six holes. Brooks would circle the score card four times in all Tuesday to finish with a 71 (-1). Joining her below par was Marta Perez who shot a field best 70 (-2) jumping 10 spots to finish tied for sixth. The finish was the best for Perez this season.
Elin Esborn also had a season-best tie for fourth. Her score of 2-under par for the week was one of just five under par in the field.
Taylor Tomlinson also tied her season-best finish as she tied for 11th at 6-over par. Tomlinson was also 11th at the Florida Challenge in January.
This is the first win for the Gators since winning a share of the NCAA Regional last spring.
Coach's Take:
On the team's perseverance -- "I'm so proud of this group. They really fought hard today in more tough and windy conditions. We talked yesterday after the round about controlling our emotions and have better attitudes and they really bought in. It paid off today. When they had a bad shot or hole they stayed tough and persevered and we were able to hold off two great teams in Southern Cal and Michigan State."-- Coach Emily Glaser
On getting the first win of the season -- "It's always fun to win. But I think the win is really important for this group because it's a first. We have been a team looking for our identity so every experience matters. But obviously winning is important too because they have proved to themselves and each other that they can do it."-- Coach Emily Glaser
On Sierra winning the individual title -- "Sierra had a great week. We are all really happy for her because of the individual win. But as her coach I'm even more proud of all the things she has done since she arrived. Her work ethic, her demeanor and maturity on the golf course and the effort she has made to put the team first." -- Coach Emily Glaser
Player's Take:
"This win means a lot, I couldn't be more proud to say I'm a Gator. I'm thankful to be surrounded by a great team and coaches. This is definitely the start to an exciting year for us." -Sophomore Sierra Brooks
